The Nigerian government, under the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, has embarked on a comprehensive digital transformation agenda aimed at boosting productivity across sectors through technology adoption. Central to this effort are two key initiatives: the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Program and the Broadband Alliance.
The 3MTT Program: A Global Leader in Talent Development
The 3MTT Program, dubbed the “world’s largest talent accelerator,” is a cornerstone of Nigeria’s digital transformation strategy. Recognizing the burgeoning demand for tech skills, the program seeks to train three million technical talents by 2027. This ambitious goal is fueled by Nigeria’s youthful demographic, with approximately 70% of the population under 35.
Focused on twelve in-demand technical skills, including software development, machine learning, UI/UX design, and data analysis, the 3MTT Program aims to bridge the skills gap and nurture a cadre of proficient professionals capable of driving digital innovation both locally and globally. The program’s three-stage model, known as the 1%-10%-100% approach, ensures a gradual and inclusive development process.
The program’s impact has been significant. The first phase, which trained 30,000 technical talents, attracted a staggering 1.7 million applications, demonstrating the immense interest and potential of Nigeria’s youth. Moreover, over 1,400 organizations expressed support for the initiative, signaling a strong commitment from the private sector.
Broadband Alliance: Expanding Digital Access
In addition to talent development, the Nigerian government is also committed to ensuring universal broadband access.The Broadband Alliance, a multi-stakeholder collaboration, aims to address the challenges of low and non-consumption, which have hindered the return on investment for the nationwide fiber network.
One of the key initiatives under the Broadband Alliance is Project 774 LG Connectivity, which seeks to connect all 774 local government secretariats to the internet. This project will not only improve access to government services but also serve as a catalyst for digital inclusion in remote and underserved areas.
To further enhance broadband infrastructure, the government has launched a special purpose vehicle to manage a Fibre Fund, aiming to raise $2 billion for expanding fiber-optic cable networks across the country. This ambitious target of laying 125,000km of fiber-optic cables will significantly improve internet connectivity and boost digital adoption.
