Description
The University of Ibadan (UI), fondly referred to as “UI,” is Nigeria’s premier university and a leading institution of higher learning in Africa. Established in 1948 as a College of the University of London, it gained full independence in 1962, making it the oldest degree-awarding institution in Nigeria. Its motto, “Recte Sapere Fons,” translates to “For Knowledge and Sound Judgment.”
History and Foundation:
The establishment of UI was a direct outcome of the Asquith and Elliot Commissions’ recommendations in 1945, which aimed to develop higher education in British colonies. The university initially began with 104 students across three faculties (Arts, Science, and Medicine) and gradually expanded its academic offerings and infrastructure. The permanent site, generously leased by the people of Ibadan for 999 years, was inaugurated in 1948, a date now celebrated as its Founders’ Day.
