Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka
Description
Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), located in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, Nigeria, is a federal university named after the first President of Nigeria, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. It is a prominent institution dedicated to the propagation and dissemination of knowledge, with a strong emphasis on addressing societal needs through teaching, research, and public service.
History and Evolution:
UNIZIK traces its origins to the defunct Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH), which was established in 1980 as a multi-campus institution. In 1991, following the creation of Anambra and Enugu States, the Awka and Nnewi campuses of ASUTECH were combined to form Nnamdi Azikiwe University. The university was subsequently taken over by the Federal Government in 1992, solidifying its status as a federal institution.
Campuses and Facilities:
The university operates with its main campus in Awka along the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway. It also has a campus in Nnewi, which houses faculties related to basic medical, medical, and health sciences, alongside the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital. A third campus at Agulu is home to the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. UNIZIK’s campuses are equipped with libraries and information services, including digital databases, to support students and staff.
Vision and Mission:
UNIZIK’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that knowledge should be freely accessible and that teaching and research should be anchored on the needs of Nigerian and international society.
