The Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna) is a specialized federal government-owned university located in Minna, Niger State, North-Central Nigeria. Established on February 1, 1983, its core objective is to drive national self-reliance in science, engineering, and particularly technology, producing graduates equipped with the necessary skills for technological advancement. Its motto is “Technology for Empowerment.”

History and Evolution:

FUT Minna was founded as one of the specialized universities of technology by the Federal Government of Nigeria. Initially, it acquired the facilities of the former Government Teachers’ College, Bosso, which now serves as its Bosso Campus. To accommodate its inevitable expansion, the university later acquired an expansive 10,650 hectares of land at Gidan-Kwano, along the Minna – Kataeregi – Bida Road, which serves as its main campus. Academic activities fully commenced at the main campus in the 2004/2005 session.

Its mission is to develop and deliver cutting-edge academic programs, conduct impactful research, and foster innovation, ultimately contributing to the technological and socio-economic development of Nigeria and the global community.

Campuses and Facilities:

The university operates across two main campuses:

  • Bosso Campus: Located within Minna city, this campus houses various academic departments and administrative units.
  • Gidan Kwano Campus: This expansive permanent site accommodates additional faculties, research centers, student hostels, and staff houses.

Both campuses are equipped with modern facilities, including well-stocked libraries (such as the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Library), state-of-the-art laboratories, lecture halls, student accommodation, and recreational centers, providing a conducive environment for learning and research.

FUT Minna is organized into various Schools (equivalent to faculties in other universities), offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs with a strong emphasis on technology and applied sciences. Some of its key schools include:

  • School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT): Focuses on modern agricultural practices and innovations.
  • School of Electrical Systems Engineering (SESE): Offers programs in various electrical and electronics engineering fields.
  • School of Infrastructure, Process Engineering and Technology (SIPET): Specializes in infrastructure development, civil, mechanical, chemical, and materials engineering.
  • School of Innovative Technology (SIT): Emphasizes entrepreneurship and management technology, and logistics.

Research and Development Centers:

FUT Minna is a hub for research and development, hosting several specialized centers aimed at advancing knowledge and addressing contemporary challenges. These include:

  • Centre for Preliminary and Extra Mural Studies (CPES)
  • Centre of Excellence in Disaster Risk Management and Developmental Studies: In collaboration with NEMA.
  • Centre for Climate Change and Freshwater Resources: Associated with the Federal Ministry of Environment.
  • Centre for Human Settlements and Urban Development (CHSUD): Collaborates with UN-Habitat.
  • Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CGEB): A designated Centre of Excellence with competencies in vaccine and drug development. The university has notably developed and produced typhoid fever vaccines that have undergone human trials.
  • Centre for Research and Development in Information Technology (CREDIT): Focuses on ICT compliance and software development.
  • Africa Centre of Excellence for Mycotoxin and Food Safety.
  • Centre for Open Distance and e-Learning (CODeL): Facilitates remote learning.

Notable Achievements and Partnerships:

FUT Minna has made significant strides in various areas. It is known for engaging in small arms design in partnership with the Armed Forces of Nigeria. The university also boasts a student-run radio station, Search FM 92.3 Campus Radio, which provides practical experience in mass communication. Its consultancy outfit, FUTMIN CONSULT, contributes to internal revenue generation.
