Nigerian Government Promises Tariff Reduction Amid Ongoing Power Sector Reforms

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian government has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing electricity tariffs as it continues to implement reforms aimed at boosting power generation and distribution. Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made the announcement during a meeting with the Executive Secretary of the National Lottery Trust Fund, Mr. Tosin Adeyanju.

Adelabu acknowledged that while Nigeria’s electricity tariffs may seem high to many Nigerians, they remain among the lowest in Africa compared to neighboring countries. He emphasized that the government is working tirelessly to increase power generation and improve distribution, which will ultimately lead to a reduction in tariffs.

“Despite the challenges, we are making significant progress in the power sector,” Adelabu stated. “By improving efficiency and reducing losses, we can make electricity more affordable for Nigerians.”

The Minister also highlighted the government’s focus on expanding access to electricity in rural areas, particularly through renewable energy projects. He expressed support for the National Lottery Trust Fund’s initiative to train rural youths in solar energy assembly, emphasizing its potential to address youth unemployment and promote sustainable development.

Adelabu acknowledged the global energy challenges, including the rising cost of gas due to the Russia-Ukraine war. However, he reiterated the government’s commitment to providing reliable and affordable electricity to Nigerians.
