U.S. Mission in Nigeria Closes Embassies and Consulates Today in Honour of Late Former Nigerian President

Abuja, Nigeria – The U.S. Mission in Nigeria has announced the closure of its Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos today, Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in honor of the late former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari. The closure aligns with the national public holiday declared by the Nigerian government to mourn the passing of the respected leader.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a London hospital. His death prompted a period of national mourning in Nigeria, culminating in today’s public holiday.

In a statement released by the U.S. Mission, it was confirmed that all visa appointments previously scheduled for today, July 15, 2025, will be rescheduled. Affected applicants are advised that they will receive updated appointment dates in due course. Consular services are expected to resume after the holiday period, typically on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, was a prominent figure in Nigerian politics. His tenure was marked by efforts to combat corruption and address national security challenges.

This gesture by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria reflects the diplomatic ties and respect between the two nations, acknowledging Nigeria’s period of national grief.
