Abuja, Nigeria – October 25, 2024 – Nigeria has officially become a partner country of the BRICS group, joining a growing alliance of emerging economies. The announcement was made during the 16th BRICS summit held in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24, 2024.
The BRICS group, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has expanded its membership to include 13 new partner countries. These countries are Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
The inclusion of Nigeria as a partner country marks a significant milestone for the nation, aligning with its aspirations to play a more prominent role in global affairs. The country’s large economy and population make it a valuable addition to the BRICS alliance.
The BRICS summit, themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Fair Global Development and Security,” focused on enhancing economic integration and cooperation among its members. The group aims to foster trade, investment, development, security, and cooperation among leading emerging market economies.
The announcement of Nigeria’s partnership with BRICS comes on the heels of statements made by the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, in November 2023. Tuggar expressed the country’s intention to join BRICS as a full member within the next two years, citing its large economy and population as key factors.
With its membership in BRICS, Nigeria is well-positioned to benefit from increased trade, investment, and economic opportunities. The country’s participation in the alliance also strengthens its global influence and standing.
