Nigeria has officially joined BRICS as a partner country, as confirmed by Brazil’s Foreign Ministry on January 17, 2025.This move, established at the 16th BRICS Summit in October 2024, aligns with the shared goals of strengthening cooperation among Global South nations and advocating for reforms in international organizations.Nigeria joins eight other partner countries: Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. As Africa’s most populous nation and the world’s sixth-largest, Nigeria shares convergent interests with BRICS members, actively participating in South-South cooperation and pushing for global governance reform. This partnership offers Nigeria increased influence in global decision-making and stronger economic and diplomatic ties.Nigeria is also pursuing membership in the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB). The BRICS bloc, now significantly expanded, accounts for approximately 37% of global GDP and aims to counter Western influence, particularly concerning sanctions and the dollar’s dominance, potentially developing an alternative payment system.
