Olumo Rock

Olumo Rock is a prominent landmark located in the city of Abeokuta, Ogun State, in southwestern Nigeria. Rising 137 meters above sea level, the rock holds deep historical and cultural significance, particularly for the Egba people.

History and Significance:

• During the 19th-century inter-tribal wars, Olumo Rock served as a natural fortress and sanctuary for the Egba people.
• The rock provided a vantage point to monitor enemy movements, which helped the Egba people secure victory in the wars.
• The name of the city, Abeokuta, translates to “under the rock,” a testament to the role the rock played in their survival.
• Olumo Rock is not just a geological feature but a sacred site. Its patron spirit is revered in the Yoruba religion as an orisha (deity).
• The rock is a monument of faith and unity, and a source of protection for the Egba people. Annual ceremonies and sacrifices are performed at the shrine located at the rock’s base.
• The site has also yielded important archaeological discoveries, including stone tools dating back approximately 1.5 million years.

• Visitors can climb the rock, either by using man-made stairs and ladders or a heavy-duty glass elevator.
