Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), located in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, is a federal government-owned and operated university with a rich history and a strong commitment to academic excellence, research, and cultural preservation. Established in 1962 as the University of Ife, it was renamed in 1987 in honor of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a distinguished Nigerian nationalist, politician, and one of the university’s founding fathers.

History and Foundation:

The university was conceived as a result of the Ashby Commission’s report in 1960, which recommended the establishment of more universities in Nigeria. The University of Ife formally began operations in October 1962. It was initially established by the regional government of Western Nigeria. The university’s move to its permanent site in Ile-Ife began in January 1967. OAU played a pioneering role in several academic fields, including establishing the first Faculty of Pharmacy in West Africa and the first Department of Chemical Engineering.

Campuses and Facilities:

The university’s sprawling campus in Ile-Ife covers approximately 13,000 acres. It is renowned for its unique architectural design, which incorporates traditional Yoruba elements and is adapted to the humid tropical climate. The campus features interconnected academic buildings, staff quarters, and student residential halls. OAU boasts a well-developed Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system, including V-SAT internet access and an efficient Intranet. It also has its own teaching hospitals, used for medical research and training.

Academic Programs:

Obafemi Awolowo University is organized into 13 faculties and two colleges (the Postgraduate College and the College of Health Sciences), which are administered by over 60 departments. It offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various fields, including:
