The Nigerian Army (NA) is the land component and largest branch of the Nigerian Armed Forces, charged with the critical responsibility of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and safeguarding its national interests. With a rich history dating back to 1863 as the “Glover’s Hausas,” it has evolved significantly, playing a pivotal role in Nigeria’s security, stability, and regional peace.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
- National Defense: Protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity and deterring external aggression.
- Internal Security: Maintaining peace and order within the nation, especially in addressing insurgency, terrorism, and other internal conflicts.
- Aid to Civil Power: Providing support to civil authorities in emergencies, disaster relief, and other non-military operations.
- Peacekeeping Operations: Contributing to regional and international peace initiatives under the United Nations, African Union, and other agreements.
