Connectivity key to improving e-governance in Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria – Tech and telecom experts have emphasized the critical role of enhanced connectivity in driving Nigeria’s e-governance initiatives. During the Nigeria eGovernment Summit 2024, themed “Transforming Governance with Technology for Improved Economy,” industry leaders discussed the challenges and opportunities for digital transformation in the country.

Reuben Oshomah, Regional Director at Avanti Satellite, underscored the importance of connectivity as the foundation for e-governance. Citing Estonia as a successful example, he noted that despite a smaller population, Estonia has achieved 90 percent connectivity, demonstrating the potential for widespread digital adoption.

However, Nigeria currently lags behind, with broadband penetration standing at 43.53 percent as of March 2024.Oshomah highlighted that a significant portion of the population, particularly those in rural and remote areas, still lacks access to reliable internet connectivity.

Lanre Ajayi, executive chairman of DigiServe Network Services Limited, emphasized the need for greater digitalization within government processes. He pointed out that many government forms remain in paper format, hindering the efficiency of e-governance. He called for a more widespread adoption of online services, especially at the state and local government levels.

Hauwa Buba Wakili, head of Digital Skills and Services at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC),acknowledged the existing limitations in e-governance and outlined the NCC’s efforts to address them. She highlighted the commission’s focus on infrastructure development and the promotion of indigenous content in the telecom sector.

Collaboration between the public and private sectors emerged as a key theme during the summit. Oshomah emphasized the need for strong partnerships to leverage the expertise and funding of the private sector while benefiting from the government’s financing, policies, and conducive environment.

Tayo Adenuga-Taiwo, CEO of Fibreworld Telecommunications Network Limited, advocated for hybrid solutions to achieve maximum connectivity. He stressed the importance of combining fiber, satellite, and radio technologies to reach underserved areas. Additionally, Adenuga-Taiwo raised concerns about data management and security within e-governance systems, emphasizing the need for robust measures to protect sensitive information.

Digital literacy emerged as another crucial aspect of e-governance. Experts agreed that educating the public about digital tools and their benefits is essential for building trust in government services.

The Nigerian government has taken steps to address these challenges. The Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy recently released a draft “National Digital Economy and E-Governance Act, 2024,” aimed at mandating and promoting digital transformation within public institutions.

As Nigeria strives to improve its e-governance capabilities, enhanced connectivity, collaboration between public and private sectors, and increased digital literacy will be essential for achieving a more efficient, transparent, and accessible government.
