Immerse yourself in nature at Yankari Game Reserve, a vast biodiversity oasis nestled in the heart of northeastern Nigeria. Initially established as a game reserve in 1956 and later designated as the country’s largest national park in 1991, Yankari has returned to state administration under the Bauchi State Government. Backed by significant infrastructure investments—including a multi-billion naira transformation introducing solar power grids, modernized chalets, and optimized safari assets—Yankari stands out as a world-class escape for wildlife enthusiasts, researchers, and family holidaymakers.
The lifeblood of the reserve is the Gaji River valley, a vital watershed that cuts the park in two. During the dry season (typically from late February to late April), larger mammal populations migrate toward this river corridor, making it the perfect time for visitors to book guided game drives.
Premier Wildlife & Eco-Adventures
- The Elephant Sanctuary: Yankari is home to an estimated herd of 100 to 150 African savanna elephants, making it the country’s most critical area for elephant conservation.
- Diverse Savannah Fauna: The park protects over 50 mammal species—including waterbucks, olive baboons, hippopotamuses, roan antelopes, and a highly protected, remnant population of critically endangered West African lions. It is also an absolute paradise for birdwatchers, featuring more than 350 distinct bird species.
- The Wikki Warm Springs: The park’s crown jewel is a 200-meter-long, 10-meter-wide natural spring situated right next to the main tourist camp. Its turquoise, mineral-rich waters flow daily at a perfectly constant 31°C (88°F), offering a unique swimming pool experience where wild baboons occasionally visit the waterside.

Historical & Cultural Monuments
Yankari is as rich in human history as it is in ecology. Travelers can tour the historic Marshall Caves—a network of 59 interconnected cave dwellings carved out of laterite rock that once served as ancient settlements—as well as multiple preserved century-old iron-smelting blast furnaces.
Accommodations & Logistics
The central hub for tourists is the Wikki Camp, which offers multiple tiers of accommodations ranging from budget-friendly suites to VIP executive villas. Guests have access to an on-site museum detailing the reserve’s history, alongside a traditional restaurant serving local and continental meals. The park is accessed via a scenic drive from Bauchi city, with the primary entrance gate located at Mainamaji Village.
