LAGOS – Etihad Airways and Ibom Air have signed an interline agreement that will connect five Nigerian cities to Etihad’s global network when the UAE carrier launches services to Lagos and Accra in March 2027. The deal, announced Monday, will let passengers book journeys to Abuja, Uyo, Port Harcourt, Calabar and Enugu on a single ticket, with baggage checked through to the final destination.
Etihad will begin daily Abu Dhabi–Lagos flights on March 23, 2027, followed by four weekly Abu Dhabi–Accra services on March 24. Combined itineraries open for booking on November 3, 2026.
The agreement gives travellers a route from Nigeria’s regional cities to Abu Dhabi and onward to Etihad’s destinations in the Middle East, Europe and Asia-Pacific. It is the first arrangement of its kind between the Abu Dhabi carrier and an airline based in Akwa Ibom State.
The Agreement
Under the terms announced, Etihad passengers arriving in Lagos or Accra will be able to connect on Ibom Air flights to Abuja, Uyo, Port Harcourt, Calabar and Enugu. The agreement also provides connections between Accra and Abuja, and between Accra and Uyo.
The airlines say the arrangement works in both directions. It gives Etihad passengers access to Nigerian destinations beyond Lagos, and it gives Ibom Air connections to international travellers arriving on Etihad’s Lagos and Accra services.
What an interline agreement is
An interline agreement lets two airlines sell a journey on one ticket while each operates its own flights under its own flight numbers. It differs from a codeshare, in which one airline markets seats on another’s aircraft under its own code. For passengers, the practical effects are one booking reference, baggage tagged to the final destination and, in most cases, the airline’s responsibility for re-accommodating them if a delay causes a missed connection. The two carriers settle the revenue between themselves.
What the Executives Said
Arik De, Etihad’s Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, said the partnership supports the airline’s long-term African expansion and extends its reach beyond Lagos and Accra through Ibom Air’s domestic network. He described the airline’s African ambitions as long-term, with Nigeria central to them, and said Ibom Air has built a strong domestic route map from its Uyo base and that working with carriers that know their home markets is how Etihad grows on the continent.
George Uriesi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ibom Air, called the agreement a significant milestone toward becoming “a truly world-class African regional airline.” He said it positions Ibom Air as the key domestic and regional connection for Etihad’s operations into Nigeria and Ghana from next year.

Who Stands to Benefit
The five cities cover Nigeria’s political, energy, commercial and tourism centres. Abuja is the seat of government and the diplomatic corps. Port Harcourt is the hub of the oil and gas industry. Uyo is Ibom Air’s home base and the centre of its network. Calabar and Enugu have large leisure, business and diaspora travel markets. Until now, travellers from these cities generally had to arrange separate tickets or make their own connections in Lagos to reach international flights.
Second Nigerian Partner for Etihad
The Ibom Air agreement is not Etihad’s first Nigerian tie-up this year. On July 23, Etihad and Air Peace announced an interline deal in Lagos that lets Etihad passengers book a single ticket from Abu Dhabi to 20 destinations on Air Peace’s network via Lagos and Accra. The Air Peace network includes Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano and Enugu, so the two agreements overlap on three cities. Uyo and Calabar are not on the list of Air Peace destinations announced in July.
Market Context
Etihad is entering a market where one Gulf carrier already operates. Emirates is currently the only airline flying nonstop between the UAE and Nigeria, operating a daily Dubai–Lagos Boeing 777-300ER service, and it also holds an interline agreement with Air Peace.
The airline announcements follow a bilateral economic agreement. The UAE and Nigeria signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in January 2026.
What Remains to Be Seen
Several details were not disclosed in the announcement, including fares, the number of daily Ibom Air connections at Lagos and Accra, and minimum connection times between the two carriers’ flights. These will determine how practical the single-ticket journeys are for passengers.
