Nigerian, Bukhari Sunusi Idris, Wins Third Place at International Quran Competition in Saudi Arabia

MAKKAH, SAUDI ARABIA — Nigeria is celebrating a major victory on the global stage as Bukhari Sunusi Idris, a gifted indigene of Kano State, secured the third-place position at the 45th King Abdulaziz International Qur’anic Recitation Competition. The prestigious event, held within the sacred precincts of the Grand Mosque, brought together 179 contestants from 128 countries in a showcase of deep devotion and scholarly excellence.

The competition, organized by the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah, and Guidance, is more than just a contest; it’s a global platform for promoting the core Islamic values of moderation and balance. With total prizes amounting to four million Saudi Riyals, it underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to fostering Qur’anic scholarship.

A Historical Legacy of Qur’anic Excellence

Bukhari Sunusi Idris’s achievement is not an isolated event but a continuation of Nigeria’s rich history in Islamic and Qur’anic scholarship. For centuries, states in northern Nigeria, particularly Kano and Borno, have been recognized as centers of Islamic learning. This tradition is deeply rooted in the Sangaya system of education, a traditional form of Qur’anic schooling that has produced generations of reciters and memorizers.

Nigeria has a strong track record at this international competition. In the past, Nigerian participants have often ranked among the top winners, highlighting the nation’s consistent ability to produce world-class reciters. Bukhari’s third-place finish follows his victory at the 39th National Qur’anic Competition in Sokoto State, which earned him the right to represent Nigeria in Makkah. This continuous pipeline of talent demonstrates a deeply ingrained culture of Qur’anic memorization and recitation.

Impact on Nigeria’s Image and Society

Bukhari’s success holds significant weight for Nigeria’s image on the global stage. It offers a powerful counter-narrative to the negative stereotypes often associated with the country, showcasing Nigeria as a source of academic and spiritual excellence. This achievement not only brings honor to the nation but also serves as a source of immense pride for the entire Ummah, positioning Nigeria as a key contributor to global Islamic culture.

Domestically, the victory has been met with widespread acclaim. The Kano State Government, led by His Excellency Governor Abba K. Yusuf, has publicly celebrated Idris’s accomplishment, a testament to the state’s ongoing support for Qur’anic education. This win is expected to further inspire young Muslims across the country to pursue a deeper study of the Qur’an, reinforcing the values of knowledge and dedication. The recognition of a home-grown talent on a global scale motivates communities to continue investing in religious education and scholarship.
