The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), often referred to simply as UNN, is a premier federal and public research university located in Nsukka, Enugu State, South-east Nigeria. Established in 1955 by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, who would later become Nigeria’s first President, the university formally opened its doors on October 7, 1960, marking a significant milestone as Nigeria’s first full-fledged indigenous and autonomous university.

UNN holds a unique place in African higher education as the first land-grant university on the continent, inspired by the American educational system. Its motto, “To Restore the Dignity of Man,” reflects its founding philosophy of fostering human potential and societal development.

The university operates across four campuses within Enugu State:

  • Enugu Campus (UNEC): Located in the modern city of Enugu, this campus is home to faculties including Business Administration, Environmental Studies, Law, Basic Medical Sciences, and Health Sciences.
  • University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) – Ituku-Ozalla: This campus focuses on medical education and training, with faculties like Dentistry and Health, Science and Technology.
  • University of Nigeria Aba Campus (UNAC): Houses the Institute of Nigerian Languages.

UNN is a vast institution, comprising 17 Faculties and 102 academic departments, offering a wide array of programs including over 108 undergraduate and 211 postgraduate courses. These programs span diverse fields from agriculture, engineering, and medicine to arts, social sciences, and environmental studies. The university is committed to academic excellence, evidenced by its distinguished faculty members, state-of-the-art infrastructure, comprehensive curriculum, and robust research output.

Beyond academics, UNN is actively involved in community engagement, aiming to expand its reach into underserved communities through open and distance learning, digital literacy outreach, and teacher empowerment initiatives. It has also embraced innovation, with initiatives like the Roar Nigeria Hub on its main campus, which encourages entrepreneurial activity among students and faculty.

Over the decades, UNN has produced a long list of accomplished alumni who have made significant contributions in various fields, including politics, business, academia, and the arts, both within Nigeria and globally.
