Mikel Obi Praises Lookman for Early Decision, Criticizes Late Switchers

Former Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has lauded Ademola Lookman for his decision to represent Nigeria at the senior international level, while also taking a swipe at players who delay their choice until they are overlooked by their countries of birth.

Speaking on ESPN, Mikel praised Lookman for making the decision early in his career, stating, “So, if you wait and you decline, you want to play for Germany or you want to play for England, just wait. Commit to your decision. But don’t wait until you are past your best and we become a second option.”   

Mikel, who represented Nigeria between 2005 and 2019, scoring six goals in 91 appearances, emphasized the importance of loyalty and commitment to one’s country of origin. He highlighted Lookman’s impressive performances for the Super Eagles, particularly at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where his goals helped Nigeria reach the final.

Lookman, who previously represented England at youth levels, switched allegiance to Nigeria in 2022 and has since made a significant impact on the team. His contributions have been instrumental in Nigeria’s recent success, solidifying his status as one of the country’s most promising talents.

Mikel’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about players born outside Nigeria choosing to represent the country at the international level. While some players have faced criticism for delaying their decisions until they are no longer wanted by their countries of birth, others have defended their choices, citing personal and professional reasons.
