The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) is the apex government organ with the statutory mandate for the strategic planning and coordination of national policies in the field of energy in all its ramifications. Established by Act No. 62 of 1979 (as amended by Acts No. 32 of 1988 and No. 19 of 1989), ECN is committed to ensuring adequate, reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable energy supply for Nigeria’s economic and socio-political development.
Key responsibilities of the ECN include:
- Strategic Planning and Policy Coordination: Developing and overseeing national energy policies and master plans for balanced and coordinated energy development.
- Information Hub: Serving as a central point for gathering, analyzing, and disseminating vital information and data related to national energy development.
- Problem Solving: Addressing inter-related technical challenges that may arise during the implementation of energy policies.
- Advisory Role: Providing expert advice to federal and state governments on various aspects of energy.
- Funding Advocacy: Inquiring into and advising the government on adequate funding for the energy sector, including research and development, production, and distribution.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Tracking the performance of the energy sector in executing government policies.
- International Collaboration: Liaising with international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) on energy matters.
- Capacity Building: Promoting training and manpower development within the energy sector.
- Promoting Diversification: Encouraging the development and optimal utilization of all energy resources, including new and alternative sources like solar and wind energy, and fostering energy efficiency.
