University of Jos

The University of Jos (Unijos) is a federal public university located in Jos, Plateau State, North-Central Nigeria. Established in 1975, it originated as a satellite campus of the University of Ibadan in November 1971. Unijos is committed to providing globally competitive education, fostering academic excellence, and promoting character development. Its motto is “Discipline and Dedication.”

History and Evolution:

The University of Jos began admitting pre-degree students in January 1972, with degree courses in Arts introduced in October 1973, followed by Science and Education. The military government officially established Unijos as an autonomous institution in October 1975. Since then, the university has expanded significantly, adding postgraduate programs in 1977 and establishing various faculties, including Law and Environmental Sciences.

Vision and Mission:

Unijos aims to be an innovative institution with strong interaction between “town and gown,” serving the people of Nigeria and humanity at large. Its mission includes encouraging a culture of excellence, delivering an outstanding and inclusive student academic experience, and promoting good character.

The university has multiple sites, including the main campus along Bauchi Road and the Township campus. It boasts a comprehensive library, e-learning resources, e-journals, and various support services for students and staff. The campus also features developed sports infrastructure and student accommodation buildings, including one specifically for postgraduate students.
